When You Sit Down To Write

When you sit down to write
By Trevor Kaldor 11/15/17

When you sit down to write:
Your computer will need to install updates.
The coffee pot will overflow.
The toilet just might be running.
And the oven, perhaps, was left on.

The kids will need their butts wiped.
The dog will lick himself raw.
The chickadees will come calling,
Chick-a-dee-dee-dee,
because you have forgotten their seed.

Weeds will sprout in the garden
Lost chores will be found
Feet will need slippers
Tongues cry out for coffee
Faucets will drip
Sinks will clog…
Children will clog,
On the floor,
With the tap shoes,
Grandma sent,
As a present.

When you sit down to write
You must turn your mind
Into a crusty cupboard
Not a scrap of care for the world
Who clamors for your bread

Any yet,
You must open your eyes
Pour your tears into the typewriter
trace your blood on the page
Weave soul into ink

You must open your heart
Because you sat down to find it
In the midst of the noise
In the press of the crush
In the moment of life that moves
And cannot be captured again

  1. I'm sure some version of this poem, about the distractions of sitting down to write, has been done many a time. Here's my take for today.
